The African Health Systems Strengthening Conference (AHAIC 2023) is being organized at a time when humans and animals are facing new challenges for their survival due to climate change, according to Rwandan Minister of Health, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, during the opening of the meeting as a Grand Guest.

“The Conference is organized at a time when humans and animals are facing new challenges for their survival due to climate change. The latter is associated with an increase in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and even premature deaths linked to extreme weather events, changes in the prevalence and geographic distribution of food and waterborne diseases and other infectious diseases. It is an opportunity to reflect on measures to sustain the gains the country has made in achieving universal access to health services and addressing key emerging issues that affect health development such as diseases non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, pandemics and climate change,” he said.

For him, it is high time that African nations strengthen their epidemiological surveillance system capacity by adopting the “One Health” or “One Health” approach and other intersectoral and cross-border cooperation; build research capacity at the human-animal interface ecosystem; Train and retain competent health human resources to address non-communicable diseases, emerging and re-emerging diseases, and other public health features, including antimicrobial resistance and climate change.

But above all, the delegates from African countries consider it useful to create a mechanism for regular daily exchanges to share information and skills in order to act in time for prevention and protection. This results from the discussions held between delegates in a restricted setting after the official opening of the conference. The WHO Representative at African level, Ms Dr Moeti Matshidiso, is ready to support these initiatives between countries. (END)
