Presidential Poll: Labour Party’s Peter Obi Defeats Tinubu in Lagos

• Overtakes Tinubu in Nigeria’s Capital City

• Wins three out of Abuja’s six LGAs

By Louis Achi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has been declared winner of presidential election in Nigeria’s most populous state, Lagos.

Lagos has the political reputation of being the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola tinubu’s impregnable turf.

Out of the 1,347,152 accredited voters Obi secured 582,454 votes to defeat his closest challenger, APC’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu who scored 572, 606 votes.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar came third with 75,750 votes.
Despite Tinubu’s victory in the majority of the 20 local governments in Lagos (11), Obi’s total votes were more. He also won in the remaining nine local government areas.

The result has been described by many analysts as a demystification of Mr Tinubu, who had been predicted to win the state where he was governor between 1999 and 2007.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results at the state’s collation centre on Monday morning.
