The Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, has called for diligence in reviewing twenty-four draft standards on African Traditional Medicine to ensure their implementability in Nigeria when adopted.
Director General of SON, Mallam Farouk Salim, made the call on Thursday in Abuja, at the 13th Technical Meeting of the National Mirror/Technical Committee on African Traditional Medicine, NM/TC82.
Salim pledged SON’s willingness to provide all the technical support required to convey the submissions of the committee and Nigeria’s position to ARSO as required.
“It is important to re-affirm that SON holds this Committee in high esteem and nothing should deter or dwindle your spirits in ensuring that Nigeria records accolades of success in this sector both at the Continental and International levels,” he said.
The committee is expected to discuss and articulate Nigeria’s position on the conclusion of the 24 draft standards in African Traditional Medicine at the meeting of African Organisation for Standardisation, ARSO.
The National Mirror Committee, NMC, on African Traditional Medicine, ATM, of THC13 was established on 3rd of August, 2015 by the Ex-DG of SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu with the appointment of Prof. Maurice Iwu as the Pioneer Chairman.
The objective of the committee is to “articulate Nigeria’s position at the continental level with respect to matters of African Traditional Medicine, ATM, prepare African Standards, ARS, with emphasis on quality and safety of African Traditional Medicine and as a basis for main streaming ATM in the African National Health care systems and give the products access to global market.”
Its membershipship is composed of 38 stakeholders with 53 members, drawn from the academia, research institutes, regulatory agencies, consumers and herbal practitioners/manufacturers.
Speaking further on activities of the co mmittee, Mrs. Uduak Udoso, said “the committee has been very committed to assigned tasks and responsibilities, with voluntary contributions through hosting and the sourcing of information for the standards development process which have included their financial, moral, and academic resources.
“The Chairman of the Committee is Prof. Maurice Iwu, a renowned Professor of Pharmacognosy, a 3rd Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), 2005-2010 and President of the Bio-resources Development Group (BDG), a herbal manufacturing company that produces and markets diverse types of Herbal teas and products,” she said.
Udoso said part of the achievements of the committee is the submission of draft standards on twelve medicinal plants, proposed by Nigeria at the ATM, ARSO TC 82 meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.
According to her, these draft standards are part of the twenty-four draft standards to be considered at this 13th meeting.
She noted that “these Standards possess a lot of medicinal and economical potentials if when approved the Exporters, Manufacturers and users of them will derive maximum benefits.”
