The Ogun State Government has launched the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII), aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality in the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving maternal and newborn survival rates, stating that the initiative would take a holistic approach by addressing infrastructure deficits, gaps in human resources, and the integration of technology.

“MAMII is a decisive step toward eliminating preventable maternal deaths by strengthening primary healthcare services, improving access to essential medical equipment, and fostering stronger community engagement,” Dr. Coker said.

The initiative has already shown promise, with Governor Abiodun’s recent investment in recruiting over 472 community health workers being hailed as a game-changer for maternal healthcare in Ogun State.

Team Lead for MAMII, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, highlighted the significance of Ogun State taking ownership of the initiative, which he said should be emulated by other states. The national team, in collaboration with development partners, will provide technical and financial support to bridge resource gaps.

Stakeholders, including the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), have expressed support for the initiative’s effective implementation.
