In commemoration of World Cancer Day, Nigerian First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for unified efforts to tackle the burden of cancer in the country, emphasizing the importance of early detection and equitable access to treatment.
Speaking on NTA Television on Tuesday, the First Lady described cancer as a significant health challenge, both globally and within Nigeria, where it remains one of the leading causes of death.
“Every individual, irrespective of their socio-economic status, deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life free from the devastating impact of cancer.”
She aligned her message with this year’s World Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique,” which underscores the need for personalized cancer treatments tailored to the needs of individual patients. “We must adapt our strategies to meet the unique needs of every individual affected by cancer,” she added.
Mrs. Tinubu expressed optimism about the country’s ability to change the narrative around cancer, urging Nigerians to prioritize their health by undergoing regular screenings and supporting each other in the fight against the disease.
“The fight against cancer is a collective responsibility. Together, we can raise awareness, prioritize early detection, and ensure equitable access to life-saving treatments,” she stated.
The First Lady also called on stakeholders in the health sector to strengthen collaborations aimed at reducing the cancer burden in Nigeria. “Unity and determination are key to making a lasting impact,” she noted.
World Cancer Day, observed globally every 4th of February, serves as a platform to inspire action in addressing the global impact of cancer.
