In a historic move, the Grimaldi Group has introduced the first-ever direct shipping service from Shanghai to Lagos, revolutionizing maritime trade between Nigeria and China.
This innovative initiative aims to tackle long-standing challenges faced by Nigerian importers, including delays and high logistics costs.
According to Ascanio Russo, Managing Director of Grimaldi Agency Nigeria and PTML Terminal on Wednesday, “This is the fastest transit time in the industry—no transshipment, no delays! Nigerian importers can now ship their goods with ease and confidence, knowing their cargo will arrive directly and on time.”
The direct shipping service will transport a diverse range of cargo, including containers, vehicles, heavy equipment, and project cargo.
By reducing the journey to just 27 days, this service significantly outperforms traditional routes, making it a game-changer for businesses reliant on timely deliveries.
Russo emphasized, “With this direct shipping service, we are addressing one of the key challenges faced by Nigerian importers—unnecessary delays caused by transshipments through other ports. This direct route reduces costs, eliminates risks, and simplifies logistics for businesses in Nigeria.”
The initiative has been praised by importers and exporters, who recognize its potential to improve the ease of doing business and foster stronger economic ties between Nigeria and China.
The service will operate through Grimaldi’s PTML Terminal at Tin Can Island Port, a facility renowned for its efficient operations.
The maiden voyage of the Great Cotonou, a state-of-the-art G5-class ro-ro multipurpose vessel, marked the launch of the monthly service.
Russo highlighted the terminal’s strategic importance, stating, “We are offering streamlined handling, priority processing, and an unparalleled level of service. PTML Terminal remains the preferred logistics hub in West Africa.”
The direct shipping service is expected to bolster trade between Nigeria and China, creating new opportunities for Nigerian businesses and strengthening Nigeria’s role in global supply chains.
