34 Terrorists Killed in Borno – Military

Nigerian troops has successfully repelled an attack by ISWAP/BHT terrorists in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State.

The skirmish left 34 terrorists dead and several weapons recovered.

According to a statement signed by Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the terrorists, riding motorcycles and gun trucks, attempted to surprise the troops.

“The terrorists sought to retaliate after the recent killing of their commander by our forces,” Major General Buba said. However, their plans were thwarted when the troops, returning from a patrol, engaged them immediately.

Reinforcements, including the Civilian Joint Taskforce, vigilantes, and hybrid forces, arrived promptly to overpower the attackers. “The swift arrival of our reinforcements was crucial in ensuring the defeat of the terrorists,” Buba explained.

Despite encountering an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that injured a vigilante commander, the forces continued their pursuit. “Our air component also conducted air interdictions, targeting the fleeing terrorists,” Buba added.

The battle’s aftermath revealed 34 terrorists killed, with 23 AK-47 rifles and over 200 rounds of ammunition recovered. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of six of our personnel in action,” said Buba, while emphasising the need for the media to respect the confidentiality of their identities until next of kin are notified.

The Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to ending insurgency and terrorism in the region, Buba affirmed. “Our forces are resolute in the fight against terrorism,” he added.
