The police command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has saved a one-day-old infant found abandoned in a bush in Mpape and has taken the mother, Khadija Ali, into custody on charges of suspected child neglect.
Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT police, stated on Sunday that officers received a distress call at around 10 a.m. on Friday. When they arrived at the location, they found a newborn wrapped in a cloth along a pathway in the bushes.
“The infant was promptly taken to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where healthcare professionals verified that the child was in stable condition.
Speaking on the matter, Adeh stated, “Our operatives acted promptly to rescue the neonate, ensuring the baby’s safety and well-being.”
During questioning, Ali allegedly confessed to leaving the baby, mentioning her personal difficulties, such as her husband’s departure. “She indicated that her husband’s abandonment made it impossible for her to look after the child,” Adeh stated.
The baby that was rescued will be transferred to the Department of Social Welfare for appropriate care. At the same time, Ali will be charged under Sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 once the investigations are complete.
Adeh urged the public to stay alert and inform authorities about similar occurrences, highlighting the police’s dedication to protecting society’s most at-risk individuals. “We encourage citizens to keep assisting us by reporting any suspicious activities and safeguarding those in danger,” she stated.
