IGP Criminalises Attacks on Police

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning against attacks on police officers, saying that any assault or killing of police personnel will be met with a firm and collective response.

Egbetokun gave the warning during his visit to the Enugu State Police Command on Friday, reaffirmed the force’s zero-tolerance policy for such acts in 2025.

“An assault on a policeman is criminal, it is an assault on the IG, and we are not going to take kindly to any act of assault on our officers,” Egbetokun declared. “Anywhere there is killing of any policeman, you must all respond collectively and appropriately. We will not tolerate it anymore.”

The IG highlighted that assaults on police officers not only undermine the individual but also attack the institution as a whole.

He made it clear that the force would ensure justice for any harmed personnel, emphasising the importance of maintaining the law and order in the country.

Egbetokun also praised the professionalism of officers in Enugu, acknowledging their hard work and dedication but expressing concern about a few officers tarnishing the force’s reputation. “There are still a few bad eggs among you,” he said, urging for greater accountability.

As part of efforts to improve the force’s effectiveness, Egbetokun assured officers that both the police leadership and the federal government are focused on enhancing the welfare and resources of the police.

He assured that the public would soon witness the fruition of these welfare programs.

“We will equip you with modern tools, emphasize professionalism, and ensure your welfare is prioritized,” he added.
