The Nigerian police have opened teargas to disperse protesters participating in the #Fearless In October demonstration against bad governance on Tuesday in Abuja.
The protesters who converged on the Utako market area of Abuja were reportedly dispersed with teargas by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force. The protesters were said to have gathered in the morning at the busy market and scampered for safety to avoid inhaling teargas fumes.
The October 1 protest tagged #FearlessInOctober has not gained traction like that of August.
The demonstration, organised by some civil society organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of the #EndBadGovernance movement, coincided with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary.
As tensions escalated, demonstrators, some carrying a large Nigerian flag, fled the scene amid the chaos.
The protesters gathered at MKO Abiola National Stadium in the early hours of October 1, 2024, to express widespread discontent with government policies.
